ABOUT THE MAVERICKS

Country music band The Mavericks was formed in 1989 in Miami, Florida when lead vocalist and guitarist Raul Malo met bass guitarist Robert Reynolds. Completing the original lineup was lead guitarist Ben Peeler and drummer Paul Deakin. The Mavericks released their self-titled debut album in 1990 on a local independent label called Y&T Music. The band currently consists of  Raul Malo (lead vocals, guitar), Paul Deakin (drums), Eddie Perez (lead guitar), and Jerry Dale McFadden (keyboards).

CAREER

1991-1993: Signing and From Hell to Paradise

The band’s independently-released debut found huge success within the Miami community, leading to a showcase for major label talent scouts in Nashville, Tennessee. The band went on to be signed by MCA Nashville in May 1991 and legend has it that the decision to sign them was made before the band had even finished their soundcheck. That October, Peeler left the band to be replaced by David Lee Holt. No longer after, the band began working on their major label debut. The album, From Hell to Paradise, was released in May 1992. After the album was released, Holt left the band.

1994-1995: What a Crying Shame

The band’s follow-up, What a Crying Shame, was released in February 1994. By the time the album was released, Nick Kane had joined the band on guitar. Around the time of recording, keyboardist Jerry Dale McFadden began accompanying the band in concerts. What a Crying Shame produced a total of five singles, with four of them reaching the top 40 on the Billboard country singles charts. The album’s titled track eventually reached number 25 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. Their next single, a cover of Jesse Winchester's "O What a Thrill", found even more success, reaching number 18. In February 1995, What a Crying Shame was certified platinum by the RIAA and in Canada, it went on to be certified double-platinum.

In addition to its commercial success, the album brought the group several awards and accolades. At the 1994 ACM Awards, The Mavericks won Top Vocal Group and Top New Vocal Duet or Group, winning the former again in 1995 and receiving another nomination for the award in 1996. At the 37th Annual Grammy Awards in 1995, the band received a nomination for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. In mid-1995, The Mavericks covered Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart's 1934 standard "Blue Moon," which they contributed to the soundtrack of the film Apollo 13.

1995-1997: Music for All Occasions

The band’s next album, Music For All Occasions, was released in 1995, preceded by the single "Here Comes the Rain", which charted at 22 on Hot Country Songs that year and at number 4 on the RPM Country Tracks chart in Canada. The album’s second single, "All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down" featuring  Flaco Jiménez, peaked at number 13 on the Hot Country Songs chart – their highest entry on the chart to date.

The next year, Music For All Occasions was certified gold by the RIAA. At the 38th Grammy Awards in February 1996, the album was nominated for Grammy Award for Best Country Album, while "Here Comes the Rain" won Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, and one year later, "All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down" was nominated in the same category. 1996 also saw the band contribute the track "I Don't Care (If You Love Me Anymore)" to the soundtrack of the 1996 Nora Ephron film Michael. The song also received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1997.

The Mavericks were nominated for Vocal Group of the Year by the Country Music Association for four consecutive years between 1995 and 1998, winning the award in both 1995 and 1996.

1997-1999: Trampoline

From December 1996 to early 1998, the band was on hiatus. In March 1998, they released the album Trampoline. The album featured the singles "To Be with You", "Dance the Night Away" and "I've Got This Feeling". "Dance the Night Away" reached number 4 on the UK Singles Chart and "I've Got This Feeling" reached number 27. On the strength of those hits, the album also reached number 10 on the UK Albums chart. "Dance the Night Away" was also the band's fifth and final Grammy Award nomination for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Despite Trampoline’s success in the UK, the album did not fair as well on home soil and the band left MCA in favor of Mercury Records, citing a lack of support from the label as the reason for their departure.

1999-2003: Super Colossal Smash Hits of the ‘90s: The Best of The Mavericks, disbanding, and first reunion

The only album that the band released with Mercury was the compilation album Super Colossal Smash Hits of the ‘90s – a greatest hits album. The album was certified gold in the UK, but the band’s success in the US had begun to wane and by the end of the decade, the group had disbanded.

In 2003, The Mavericks reformed with Eddie Perez as their fourth guitarist. They signed to British label Sanctuary Records and released two albums with them; The Mavericks and a live album recorded in Austin, Texas, which was accompanied by a DVD release. The group toured throughout 2003 and 2004 to promote the album but disbanded once again when it did not meet the commercial success of their previous work.

2011-2015: Second reunion and Valory Music

In October 2011, Malo, Deakin, Reynolds, and Perez reunited as The Mavericks for a second time, with McFadden joining on keys as an official fifth member. They signed with Valory Music Co., an imprint of Big Machine Records, in February 2012, and later that year they toured to promote their reunion. In early 2012, they released the EP Suited Up and Ready on the label.

In Time, their debut full-length album on the label was released in February 2013. The album reached number eight on the Billboard Country Albums chart and number 39 on the Billboard 200.

Throughout 2014, the band set off on a 25th-anniversary tour. That October, Reynolds was asked to leave the band due to his struggles with addiction.

Mono, the band’s next album on Valory, was released on February 7, 2015. A year later, it was nominated at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards for Grammy Award for Best Americana Album.

2016-present: Mono Mundo

In 2016, the band was released from Valory Music. Subsequently, The Mavericks founded their own label, Mono Mundo, in association with Thirty Tigers. Brand New Day, their debut release on their own label, was released in March 2017. As with their previous album, it was nominated for Grammy Award for Best Americana Album the following year. This was followed in 2018 by their first Christmas album, Hey! Merry Christmas!

The band toured throughout 2019 to celebrate their 30th anniversary, mainly performing dates in the United Kingdom, Canada, and The Netherlands, with a few select US dates too. Their next album, Play the Hits, was released in 2019 and consists entirely of covers, including Bruce Springsteen's "Hungry Heart", Elvis Presley's "Don't Be Cruel", Willie Nelson's "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain", and Freddy Fender's "Before the Next Teardrop Falls" among others.

En Español, the band’s most recent album, is a Spanish-language film released in 2020.
