About Ali Wong

Ali Wong was born on April 19, 1982 in the Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco, California, where she grew up. She is the daughter of a Chinese-American father and Vietnamese mother.

Wong attended San Francisco University High School, where she was student body class president, and graduated in 2000. After high school, she enrolled at UCLA, where she majored in Asian American Studies. Whilst at college, she joined the university's LCC Theatre Company, the country's largest and oldest Asian-American theater company, which was co-founded by fellow comedian Randall Park, and during her junior year, she spent time in Hanoi, Vietnam where she studied language as part of a Fulbright program. She also worked for a summer at The Lair of the Golden Bear, a UC Berkeley alumni summer family camp. She graduated with a B.A. in 2004.

Career

After graduating, Wong ventured into stand-up comedy, performing her first set when she was 23 years old at the BrainWash cafe, laundromat and comedy club in San Francisco. Having been bitten by the comedy bug, she made the move to New York in 2009 to pursue her stand-up career, sometimes performing up to nine times a night on the circuit.

Two years later, Wong was named as one of "10 Comics to Watch" by Variety. Television appearances on The Tonight Show, John Oliver's New York Stand Up Show and Dave Attell's Comedy Underground Show soon followed, and in 2012 she landed a role on the NBC sitcom Are You There, Chelsea?. That year, she also appeared on Chelsea Lately, and in 2013 she was part of VH1's pop culture comedy show Best Week Ever and MTV's sketch show Hey Girl. She also had supporting roles in Oliver Stone's film Savages and in the 2013 film Dealin' with Idiots.

In 2014, Wong was hired as a writer for the ABC sitcom Fresh Off the Boat, where she worked for the show's first three seasons. She was also cast as Dr. Lina Lark in the psychological medical drama TV show Black Box, a main cast member, opposite Kelly Reilly and Vanessa Redgrave. Over the next year, she also appeared in several episodes of Inside Amy Schumer.

Wong's big break came with the release of her debut Netflix special, Baby Cobra, which first aired on Mother's Day 2016. The special was recorded when she was seven months pregnant with her first child, and her performance was critically acclaimed, attracting widespread media attention. In October 2016, she was cast as a main character in the ABC sitcom American Housewife.

In May 2018, Wong released her second Netflix stand-up special, Hard Knock Wife, which was recorded when she was seven months pregnant with her second child. The show received further acclaim and cemented her as one of comedy's most exciting new talents. That December, she announced her 2019 Milk and Money stand-up comedy tour.

2019 reunited Wong with her college friend Randall Park and Fresh Off the Boat's Nahnatchka Khan, when she co-wrote and starred in the Netflix romantic comedy film Always Be My Maybe. She also starred in the critically acclaimed animated Netflix series Tuca & Bertie as Bertie, alongside Tiffany Haddish as Tuca.
